THE HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEALTH

Holistic health.....world of calm.

Holistic Health addresses the whole person - body, mind, spirit and emotions.

Once the domain of alternative or complementary therapists, the holistic approach is increasingly being adopted by conventional medicine with the introduction of “wellness programmes” focusing on whole body health, programmes of nutrition, exercise and preventative care. In this busy and stressful world it is all too easy to focus on the problems of the world around us and forget to look after ourselves.

We routinely take our cars for a regular service but seldom do the same for ourselves!

Here is a little background information on the therapies on offer to relax, revitalise and re-energise.

Welcome to the world of calm...

Who we are

Christine Cowan, DSM, DIR, Reiki Master

Christine was born in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders and brought up in Edinburgh.  She was educated at George Watson’s Ladies’  College in the days before comprehensive education.  After a spell at Edinburgh University, studying Mathematics, she decided it was not for her and joined the Civil Service - Registers of Scotland - where she still works today.

She has always been interested in alternative and complementary therapies but this interest deepened in early 1999 when a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer, introduced her to Reiki.  Initially concerned for her friend’s health if she were to abandon conventional medicine in favour of some “quirky” alternative, Christine decided to investigate further.  She gathered together all the information she could find – magazine articles, books, information on the Internet and personal experiences of friends – and discovered a truly complementary therapy.  Reiki works on many levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.  It is non-invasive and does not interfere with conventional medical treatments.  Entranced by what she discovered, Christine decided to learn Reiki.  In 2000  she attained Level 1 followed in 2001 by Level 2.  Two years later, in 2003, she became a Reiki Master.

A strong believer in lifelong learning, Christine decided to follow up her Reiki training with an Anatomy and Physiology qualification.  While researching this she discovered the Scottish Massage School run by the Scottish Massage Therapists’ Organisation (SMTO)  - the premier Massage Therapists’ organisation in Scotland.  In 2005 Christine attained a Diploma in Swedish Massage and won the Nick Carter Cup.  This was followed in 2006 by a Diploma in Reflexology where she graduated top of her class.  Christine also has Certificates in Emotional Freedom Technique and Thermo Auricluar Therapy (Hopi Ear Candles).

Christine practices her therapies from a treatment room attached to the family home but also does corporate work for On-Site-Relaxation Limited in BSKYB and Energetics Limited in the Townhouse Group of Hotels in Edinburgh.

She and Tom have been married for thirty five years have two children and two grandchildren.

Our Services

Christine offers the following services:

Reflexology

Reflexology is an holistic therapy that heals the physical as well as the emotional body by reducing stress, increasing circulation and vitality.

The client is an active participant in the process. Through breathing and a feeling of awareness they learn to listen to their own body and to deal with pain both physical and emotional. The therapist’s role is to “kick start” the client’s own body’s natural healing abilities.

History of Reflexology

Evidence from ancient civilisations in Egypt, India and China shows that a form of Reflexology was practised many centuries ago.

Modern Reflexology stems from “Zone Therapy” introduced to the West in 1913 by Dr. William Fitzgerald. The body is divided into ten parallel, longitudinal zones extending from the toes of each foot to the fingers of each hand via the brain. Eunice Ingham further developed this in the 1930s by mapping the whole body onto the feet. She discovered that alternating pressure on the various reflex points had therapeutic effects far beyond the limitations of Zone Therapy.

Main Effects of Reflexology

The power of the mind. By focussing the mind energy is brought to the problem area.
Reflexology improves circulation and induces relaxation. A relaxed body places less demand on the systems making them function more efficiently.
Reflexology has a direct effect on the nervous system reducing tension and inducing a state of relaxation.
Reflexology clears blockages in the flow of “chi” energy, balancing the body and making it more efficient.

Reflexology works on different levels. It relaxes the body, eases the mind and reassures the soul.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

Based on impressive new discoveries regarding the body's subtle energies, Emotional
Freedom Techniques (EFT) has been proven successful in thousands of clinical cases. It applies to just about every emotional, health and performance issue you can name and it often works where nothing else will.

E.F.T. has been successfully used in treating the following: pain management, addictions, weight loss, allergies, children's issues, vision, headaches, panic/anxiety, asthma, trauma, abuse, depression, dyslexia, carpal tunnel, anger, fears/phobias, eating disorders, OCD, blood pressure, diabetes, fear of flying, claustrophobia, agoraphobia, and many other issues.

The “tapping” method used by Paul McKenna is derived from E.F.T.
